Downgauging Plastic Flexible Packaging

Many companies use the same packaging film and format year after year without considering the environmental benefits which can be gained from change.

The stage of the review is to optimise the pack size by reducing unnecessary excess film in seal areas and making sure the pack is the correct fit for the product.

The next stage is to establish the minimum operational thickness of the film. Often film is thicker than needed due to its perceived 'quality' but this is no longer relevent.

it would then be prudent to consider changing from a laminate to a co-extrusion or even a single web film. New films are available all the time, so please ask.

It may even be worthwhile reviewing the existing pack format. for example changing from jars, cans, bottles to pouches.

There are financial benefits and significant savings in volume. Our customers are now cumulatively saving in excess of £3m every year in the cost of material.

The photograph shows what weight reduction looks like. This customer reduced their film usage by 25 tonnes per year.
