Environmental Films
We have long recognised that consumer demand for ‘greener’ packaging is a significant factor in the choice of packaging materials. To this end, a number of years ago we set up a separate division within our business – Natural Flexible - which is dedicated solely to sourcing packaging films which are either environmentally friendly, compostable, biodegradable, renewable, recyclable or sustainable. Whatever approach you want to take to address the environmental impact of your packaging films, we’ve got a choice of materials and solutions suitable for everyone.
Chalk based film
Based on a unique blend of chalk and polymer, this film probably has the best environment credentials available. As chalk is a natural resource which is abundantly available throughout the world, and because of its lower polymer content, this type of film gives a significant reduction in oil consumption, carbon emissions and energy use in its manufacture. Specific blends of the film can be tailored to flow-wrap, thermoform, lidding and VFFS applications. This film has already seen commercial applications with M&S, Tesco, Dairy Crest and McDonalds.
Biodegradable OPP/ cast PP
Advances in film technology have meant that OPP films can now be manufactured to degrade and biodegrade after a period of time rather than remaining inert in landfill or as litter. These oxydegradable films have all the same physical properties of standard OPP but are engineered to break down post-disposal.
Recycled content films
rPET (recycled content polyester) films offer an excellent opportunity to address issues about packaging waste in a way that really makes a difference to consumers. These films contain approximately 30% post-consumer recycled polyester which has been collected from recognised, audited waste streams. The recovered material is reprocessed back into a food-grade film and can be used just like virgin material with further recycling possible in existing PET waste streams.
Natureflex / PLA
These are films manufactured from organic matter such as corn starch, or in the case of Natureflex – eucalyptus. Coming from sustainable sources they are naturally degradable. Despite their high costs and somewhat differing environmental credentials, these films are available for specialist applications.
